My friend Nicole ventured out of Manhattan to sightsee in Bushwick this weekend — practically her first visit since she lived in the Moore St. lofts 5 years ago. It was the perfect opportunity to show off the Jefferson stop area and “Morgantown.” We started off with a swing by the best coffee shop on earth, and rounded the corner to the famed tacos of Starr Street (open on weekends now!) and she was of course already amazed. We then stopped and each got a dress at Urban Jungle Vintage — then on to the main attraction: Factory Fresh.
Their current show, Un Named Rottens, “showcases works that look at the primal side of the human psyche and its relation to us in the modern society” and features new works by New York-based artists Beau Velasco, Daniel St. George II, and Jeremiah Maddock. Co-founder Ali Ha came from the backyard when we came in and reported that the opening (scroll down for pics) had been successful and that they actually get more foot traffic for openings here in their new spot on Flushing Ave than they did on Orchard Street in the LES!
We were both blown away by Jeremiah Maddock’s intricate drawings and Ali told us that as a child, writing utensils had to be taken away from him or he would draw on anything and everything. Daniel Anthony St. George II (aka AZstar78) displayed text and image collages made on (really amazing) found paper; copies of his recent zine “The Royal We” are available at the gallery. Painter/tattoo artist/noise band co-founder Beau Velasco’s pieces were a great contrast to Maddock’s “musical hieroglyphics” (as perfectly described in his bio). Factory Fresh delivers again. We swung by Moore Street to take a peek at Roberta’s — and the Saturday tour was complete.
